I am in Studio Critique 1 this semester and our first assignment is to write a little bit about us on our blog.
My name is Molly McVey and I am a sophomore at Pittsburg State University. As of right now I am a General Arts Major with a minor in photography. I grew up in Overland Park, Kansas and graduated high school from Blue Valley Southwest. I have always loved art, especially photography. I also enjoy painting, but photography is my absolute favorite. Some artists that I look to for inspiration are Erik Johansson and Fernando Gregory. They are both illusionist photographers and their work is seamless and unique. On the other hand I also admire Georges Seurat, Monet, and Caravaggio’s work. They each have a very different style that sets them apart from others. At home I do a lot of equine photography. I will take photos at the shows I am not competing in. I also do photo shoots for anyone that wants photos of them and their horses. I have my own website that I post the photos on so they are easy to access. Besides the equine photography, I love to go on little photo adventures with my friends. I absolutely love going into old abandoned buildings and shooting. I don't like to play it safe, so I take photos from unusual angles and views to make the shot more interesting for the viewer. I post most of these photos on my Flickr account. http://paintedmarephotography.weebly.com http://www.flickr.com/photos/67704696@N02/ I find retouching and commercial photography fascinating. I did a workshop with current and retired Hallmark photographers my senior year of high school. I got to see how they did all of their commercial photography and I found it extremely intriguing, I realized that this is what I want to do with my photography. We met twice a month, once to do a photo shoot and then to have a critique of our work from the shoot. I also got to see some of their work with retouching and I found it very interesting. This semester I want to work on my skills with Photoshop. I want to experiment with some illusion type photography, by putting objects into photographs that don’t belong, but making them seem as though they do belong in the photograph. I also want to work on some commercial type photography and retouching, where I will be taking parts from different photographs and combing them together to create one final image. I am planning on enhancing my skills with Photoshop throughout the semester. I will start out simple and make my photos more complex as the semester progresses. I am excited to see where my work will go with everything I am going to learn by being apart of this class.
